Influence of Process Parameters on Residual Stresses Induced by Milling of Aluminum Alloy Using Taguchi’s Techniques

In this paper, the straight flute end-milling cutter used for machining of Al-Si-Mg-Fe alloy work pieces was investigated. The machining processes could induce residual stresses that enhance greatly the performance of the machined component. Machining residual stresses correlate very closely with the cutting parameters. In the experiments, the residual stress on the surface of workpiece was mea...

Enhanced Exponential Fatigue Crack Growth Model for Al-alloy

In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to use “exponential model” in the prediction of fatigue life without integrating the fatigue crack growth rate curve (FCGR). The obtained results are compared with experimental crack growth data obtained for 2024-T351 aluminum alloy for four bending V-Charpy specimens under constant amplitude loading in stress ratio range from 0.1 to 0.3 an...

Effect of Compressive Residual Stress on the Corner Crack Growth

In the present study, plasticity induced crack closure (PICC) concept and three dimensional (3D) finite element methods (FEM) are used to study the effect of compressive residual stress field on the fatigue crack growth from a hole. To investigate the effect of compressive residual stress on crack opening levels and crack shape evolution, Carlson’s experiments were simulated. Crack shape evolut...

Design of Broaching Tool Using Finite Element Method for Achieving the Lowest Residual Tensile Stress in Machining of Ti6Al4V Alloy

The aim of this study, is to use finite element simulation to achieve the optimal geometry of a broaching tool that creates the lowest tensile stress at the machined surface of the Ti6Al4V alloy. It plays a major role in reducing production costs and improves the surface integrity of the machined parts. The type and amount of residual stress determined by the thermal and mechanical loads transm...

Neutron diffraction investigations on residual stresses contributing to the fatigue crack growth in ferritic steel tubular bridges

Fatigue crack growth observed in tubular K-joint specimens, typical of tubular bridge structures, always initiates at the chord crown toe locations whether the applied stress range is tensile or compressive. Even though other locations around the weld have highest hot-spot stresses, chord crown toe locations are still the most critical. This raises the question about the relevant tensile residu...
